Airwolf was designed by Doctor Moffet to the “Firm’s” specifications, but over the years of development, the Firm’s changing responsibilities moved the Airwolf project away from the tactical military machine, and further into the covert operations role.

Speed became more important than firepower, stealth more important than speed. Airwolf’s mission made it a compromise, and compromise always makes for weaknesses.

Airwolf was painted with unique and timeless two-tone color-scheme: “Phantom Gray Metallic” DuPont Imron X on top, and a custom pearl-gray almost white on the underside of the craft, in a countershaded pattern. Air wolf was also kitted-out with various custom prop modifications, including “turbo jet” engines and intakes, an in-air re-fueling nozzle and blister cowling on the nose of the craft, retractable chain guns at the wingtips, and a retractable rocket launcher, known as the “ADF Pod” ADF, of course, standing for All Directional Firing, as the pod could freely rotate degrees to fire at targets at the sides – 90 degrees to the left, forward, or 90 degrees to the right on its belly.

Untouchable by other choppers while at high speed, it’s thirsty engines forbid a constant supersonic run. So while other choppers cannot out manoeuvre Airwolf, at low speeds they can equal it. And with high speed jets, the corollary holds true: although far more maneuverable than conventional aircraft, Airwolf cannot outrun a supersonic fighter. It takes a great pilot, like Hawke, to turn Airwolf’s weaknesses into its strengths.

Airwolf tries to give something to everyone and, in the process, comes out looking a little bit tired.

Airwolf isn’t overly bad, but neither one of the game levels are spectacular. What a disappointment! Level after level of the same exact thing. The advanced levels are much harder than the early ones. The fighting sequences aren’t impressive, nor difficult.

Airwolf just goes to show that great names don’t always mean great games. Good concept that is too repetitive. There are extra sequences and new goals like taking on the enemy control tower and rescuing hostages, but that’s not enough variety to elevate this one above average. I did like this one better than Stealth ATF , but it could have had better graphics and play. The game opens with some cool still pictures that explain the story, but there’s not much else to rave about after that.

There’s not much depth to play – the game has little action and it’s difficult to control the helicopter in the side-view stages. Airwolf just didn’t hold’my interest at all.
